We’ve moved on from the days when “bacteria” always equalled “bad”. Good bacteria have been getting a lot of attention for their role in digestive health, but they have plenty of other roles, too – and Counter Culture’s mission is to make probiotics available as home cleaning and bath & body products. They’ve developed a balanced mixture of 13 different strains of lactic acid bacteria that are incubated for a full month as they produce natural detergents and anti-odour compounds and grow into their own strong ecosystem, capable of overcoming any pathogenic bacteria that get in their way. Bottled with purified water, essential oils, and other all-natural ingredients, these become safe and effective household cleansers and hand/body washes.

Michelle Perkins was scared when her toddler accidentally got locked in the bathroom by herself – and she was horrified when she got the door open and saw that her daughter had spilled a bleach-based cleaner on her clothes. Fortunately, it hadn’t reached her skin, and so Michelle breathed a sigh of relief and began looking for some safer cleaning supplies. Finding an innovative bacteria-based cleaner in, of all places, a pigsty, she set about working with the scientists who’d created it to design a version for home use. It was her idea to toss in a few fresh-smelling essential oils to finalise a formula that’s safe, smells beautiful, and cleans without chemicals.
