Founders of Natural EvolutionRobert Watkins was a second-generation Queensland banana grower and an inventor who’d received the 2010 Young Farmer of the Year award for his innovations in banana harvesting and shipping. So when he became frustrated with having to leave tonnes of perfectly good bananas that didn’t meet supermarket standards for size and shape to be eaten by local cattle and Agile wallabies, Rob got to thinking about solutions. He experimented with turning the rejected bananas into flour, and this proved to be such a popular item at his family’s cafe that he soon had another problem in need of a solution: making it quickly enough to satisfy demand! The peeling and processing technology he then developed allowed him to found Mt Uncle’s Banana Flour, the predecessor to Natural Evolution, and has benefited the entire Queensland banana industry by creating a huge new market for the approximately 450 tonnes of green bananas formerly wasted each week in North Queensland alone.
