Behind The Brand: Oil Garden

Oil Garden are Australia's leading creators of pure essential oils. Their admirable ethos is centred around the healing properties of nature, and each of their pure essential oils embodies this ideology with nothing but pure ingredients in every bottle.

We caught up with Oil Garden's Brand Manager, Chloe Shoreson, to find out more about the brand that's connecting Aussies with the healing benefits of nature, one heavenly scent at a time.

Oil Garden have been creating pure essential oils for more than 30 years. What was the inspiration to create an essential oil brand?

In 1985 on a tea tree plantation situated in the outskirts of Byron Bay, our very first Pure Essential Oil was harvested by hand, distilled and bottled.  The powerful healing and antiseptic properties of the organic tea tree plant was the beginning of something special and inspired the start of the brand Oil Garden and its Essential Oil offerings. We believe in the healing properties of nature. Every bottle of Oil Garden essential oil is simply 100% pure and natural. You can rest assured that all of our products are pure uncompromised nature. Today Oil Garden offers a complete portfolio of Pure Essential Oils and related products. We sustainably source the purest oils from the best growing conditions around the world, delivering genuine value without compromise on quality.

From growing conditions to extraction, what exactly goes in to creating the perfect bottle of essential oil?

Inspired by nature, all of our products are plant based with no harsh chemicals, parabens or synthetic fragrances. Every drop of our Pure Essential Oil undergoes stringent quality assurance (QA) testing in Australia to guarantee its quality and purity.

A strict quality assurance program is at the heart of Oil Garden's ongoing commitment to ensure exact standards of purity are maintained throughout the oil’s journey from farm to bottle. As with most crops, oil quality can vary from season to season and from supplier to supplier. Even the same plant grown in different regions, or plants picked at different times of year will produce slightly different chemistry in the essential oils.

For those who aren't familiar, what is aromatherapy and how can we benefit from it?

Essential oils are the "life force" of the plant and once extracted are capable of improving general health and wellbeing. Just as they protect the plant, so too are they powerful healing agents once extracted.

Naturally occurring from aromatic plants, pure essential oils occur in the flowers, leaves, woods, gums, seeds, roots, grasses and fruit rind. Once extracted, they contain their own distinctive aroma and most impressively each essential oil has its own unique chemistry and is made up of hundreds of individual chemical components. These range from energising, uplifting and renewing to sedating, calming and relaxing.

Essential oils can assist with relieving the symptoms of minor ailments such as headaches, muscular aches and pains and sleeplessness. They can be used in skincare and beauty applications to improve hydration, treat acne or regenerate tired ageing skin. They can be used in a bath to relax at the end of the day or in a shower to invigorate the mind and body in the morning. They can enhance a dinner party or prepare you for a board meeting, kill airborne germs in your home or simply make your home, or space smell divine. Whichever way you choose to incorporate them into your lifestyle they will enhance the overall quality of your life and above all improve the state of your physical and emotional wellbeing.

Oil Garden has an aromatherapy specialist, Pat Princi-Jones. What does her role entail and what are the benefits of having an in-house expert?

Our in house aromatherapy specialist Pat Princi-Jones, has over 30 years of industry experience and is an associate member of the International Aromatherapy & Aromatic Medicine Association (IAAMA). Pat is our guru and inspiration with boundless knowledge and endless love of Pure Essential Oils.

We love having Pat as part of the Oil Garden team. What are some of your favourite essential oils and why?

My personal essential oil favourites are citrus scents – think lemongrass, orange or lime! They instantly lift my mood and smell delicious! In saying that, we do have Natural Remedy blends in the range now which we launched recently… the Stress Relief and Sleep Assist Blends are beautiful!  Not only do these blends smell great, they are also TGA Listed products that aid my overall wellbeing – it’s a win-win!

How does Oil Garden develop new essential oil blends?

Blends are starting to become a large part of our product portfolio. With more and more people being time poor, it was essential (pardon the pun!) to create pre-blended blends for consumers. Here at Oil Garden, we are constantly looking at reports on health and wellbeing, global trends and talking to our retailers and consumers. Along with this information, and the trusted support from our experts, blends are created.

Our recent launch of Natural Remedies blends is a great example of what research and communication can do to help bring products to market. Oil Garden launched seven blends to help aid in Sleep, Stress, Immunity, Headaches and other ailments.  These blends are the perfect introduction to first-time users of aromatherapy and essential oils who are looking for a quick and convenient solution! We also launched the perfect spring time product this month to the range, Hay Fever Ease! Keep an eye out for this product that will become your new best friend if you are a hay fever sufferer like myself!

Society today is incessantly busy. What are the best essential oils to combat stress?

Oil Garden’s Stress Relief blend is the perfect product for time-poor and stressed people! The calming effects of Sweet Orange, Mandarin, Lavender, Bergamot and Cedarwood essential oils have been traditionally used in aromatherapy as natural sedatives during times of stress to help relieve nervous tension, headaches, fatigue and mild anxiety, providing a sense of calm and comfort. A bonus of this blend, the scent is divine!

The Oil Garden Stress Relief Blend comes in an essential oil 25mL bottle as well as a convenient roll on to apply on the go when you are out and about!

What is Oil Garden's proudest achievement (so far)?

It is so hard to pick just one achievement! Oil Garden as a brand exists to deliver the healing properties of nature to you through the power of pure essentials – with a focus on purity, quality and value. Oil Garden has never strayed from its purpose and beliefs and I think this is a great achievement for a brand today. The brand mandatories of high-quality products, ethically driven products and decision making as well as having essential oils at the heart of what we do, has never wavered.

Oil Garden have conquered aromatherapy, complemented it with vaporisers, balms and water mists, delved into skincare, and more. What's next for Oil Garden? Are there any exciting new products in the works? (if so, any hints 😉?)

We are always working on new and exciting developments at Oil Garden! Just last week we launched a range essential oil blends developed for babies and children (+3 months)! The range is absolutely adorable and consists of blends for sleep, immunity and creative play!

Next steps for Oil Garden is to help make the power of pure essential oils easier to use and access for all customers.

The natural remedies that essential oils can provide from a health and wellbeing standpoint is our focus, and being able to provide these in easy-to-use formats to our customers.

Which essential oils would you recommend for someone starting out with aromatherapy?

For someone starting out with aromatherapy, I would recommend any of the pre-blended essential oils in our range. These coupled with a vaporiser or diffuser is the easiest and most convenient way to harness the power of pure essential oils!

We have some great mood enhancing blends, Refresh & Renew a personal favourite of mine, which is a splash of citrus pure essential oils blended with warming ginger to uplift and refresh your mind and body.
