Founded in 1969 as the first company focusing on herbal teas, Celestial Seasonings has grown to become the largest in North America, producing well over a billion cups of tea every year. While the herbs for their first teas were harvested by the founders themselves from a secluded canyon in the mountains of Colorado, Celestial now sources more than a hundred different ingredients from nearly 40 countries. Fifty years on, they still make sure that all their teas are beneficial for their customers and for the environment, they still put lovely hand-painted illustrations on all their boxes of tea, and they still have their headquarters in Boulder, Colorado - on Sleepytime Drive, named for their flagship tea.

Celestial Seasonings founder Mo Siegel grew up among Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. He would eat the wild berries that grew there, and he knew all the herbs. So when he opened an art gallery / health food store in the late 60’s, he sourced some of his wares very locally, simply hiking out to harvest herbs which he sewed by hand into muslin teabags. His teas were so popular that he partnered with a few friends to turn them into a company. Celestial Seasonings really took off in 1972 with the introduction of their now-famous Red Zinger and Sleepytime blends, and after three decades of growth Mo himself finally took off in 2002 – back to the Rockies, where he wanted to finish hiking all the high mountains he hadn’t had time for yet.
