Floradix has been a work in progress and under new ownership – since 1962. That’s when Salus-Haus bought the brand, and they’ve been making it better ever since. The original formula, for example, contained just 3mg of iron per 100mL. It’s now 82mg, with much better bioavailability thanks to in-house research that discovered how well the human body absorbs iron contained in yeast – and developed a recipe that blended yeast with iron-rich fruit juice to exploit the fact. With the improvements came unprecedented popularity, and Floradix is now Salus’s bestseller, exported worldwide and used by everyone from mums to top athletes across the globe.

Dr Otto Greither was a medical polymath. After graduating from medical school in 1896, he studied subjects as diverse as neurology, dentistry and veterinary medicine. He was also a very sick man, plagued by a chronic digestive condition. His ultimately successful efforts to heal himself led him to an interest in nutrition and naturopathy as well, and that led him to found Salus-Haus in Munich in 1916. By 1928 he had a network of 50 health food shops before the company transitioned into manufacturing. The Second World War wiped it all out, but Dr Greither’s 20-year-old son, also named Otto, was there to pick up the pieces. Over the past 70 years, Otto has rebuilt Salus-Haus into one of Germany’s leading health product companies.
