Born near Basel, Switzerland, in 1902, Alfred Vogel became an early advocate of health food and holistic natural healthcare involving fresh herbs and other plants. After operating a local health food store and founding a still-published healthy-living magazine during the 1920s, he devoted the rest of his life to naturopathic research in which he developed scientifically valid natural remedies and travelled the world to find more, absorbing the wisdom of Native Americans, Native Australians, African tribesmen, and practitioners of Asian traditional medicine in India, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. Between trips, he wrote the bestselling The Nature Doctor and founded several successful health food companies.
