Since its beginning, Bon Ami has used feldspar as the foundation abrasive mineral in its formulas. Previously regarded as a waste product, feldspar became its own worth when quarrymen saw it make their shovels sparkle after it was removed from silica quartz. Where quartz-derived cleaners would scratch surfaces spotless, feldspar was a softer polish. As the cleaning industry evolved decade by decade, Bon Ami was under pressure to incorporate artificial scents, colouring agents, or abrasive chemicals into the product in order to compete with big-brand options. But after chemical cleaners became ubiquitous in the 1970s, letters flowed in from devoted customers expressing gratitude to Bon Ami for what it did not contain: no chlorine bleach, no perfumes, no dyes. That fidelity compounded the company's commitment to remain true to its heritage and keep on saying no to unnecessary additives.
